How to prepare original lyrics, adapted lyrics, a meaning guide, and a release plan that a publisher can meaningfully review.
Read the story01What can I license through RightRiff?
RightRiff focuses on derivative works: remixes, samples, mashups, arrangements, lyrical and melodic adaptations, foreign language adaptations, and parodies. The permissions available depend on the original work, its rights holders, and your intended use.
02Do I need permission for both the song and the recording?
A composition and a sound recording are separate works. If you use an existing recording, your project may need permission from both the recording owner and the composition owners. Re-recording a part does not automatically clear the underlying composition. Describe exactly what you plan to use when starting your request.
03Do rights holders keep ownership of their music?
Yes. Registering music on RightRiff does not transfer ownership of the original material. Rights holders choose allowed derivative uses and set licensing terms, including royalty percentages and advance minimum royalties.
04How much does licensing cost?
Rights Holder Research is $280. Derivative Work Licensing is $399 and includes rights holder research. Licensing also involves any fees or royalties required by the rights holders; these are separate from the service fee. You receive the proposed permissions, royalties, advance minimums, and fees before paying rights holder fees.
05Is permission guaranteed?
No. Permission depends on the rights holders and the specific project; a request does not authorize release. RightRiff offers a full refund on its research service if rights holders cannot be identified, and a full refund on its licensing service if permission cannot be secured. Timing varies with the work and the approvals needed.
06Does a cover license cover my remix or adaptation?
Do not assume it does. Changing lyrics, translating a song, sampling a recording, or creating a remix can call for permissions beyond a standard cover license. Your release format also matters. Tell us what you will change and where the finished work will appear so the scope can be reviewed.
